He later transitioned to corrections work at the Southern Ohio Correctional Facility before joining the Portsmouth Police Department\, where he advanced through the ranks from patrolman to captain and served as acting chief. Throughout his tenure with the department\, he was instrumental in local drug task force operations and helped shape community-focused policing strategies.\n\n\n\nFollowing his distinguished career with Portsmouth Police\, Sheriff Thoroughman applied his leadership experience at Shawnee State University\, where he transformed the campus security function into a comprehensive Department of Public Safety a hybrid of both police and security officers.\n\n\n\nIn addition to his operational expertise\, Sheriff Thoroughman holds a bachelor's degree from Shawnee State University and maintains certifications as both an Emergency Medical Technician and volunteer firefighter.
